A tradition of musical dialogue

About Quan Họ

Quan họ is a folk-singing tradition from Vietnam’s Kinh Bắc region, recognized by UNESCO in 2009.

It is built around musical dialogue: one group sings a câu ra, and another answers with a matching câu đối, using a related melody and different words.

These songs carry greetings, affection, longing, and the bittersweet moment of parting.

After learning Quan họ with Nghệ sĩ Minh Thì, I created this songbook to share that experience: a place to listen, follow the lyrics, and discover what the songs express. As I continue learning, I hope it gives other young listeners a starting point of their own.

Learn to Respond

Five teaching comparisons using songs already in the 15-recording Songbook.

In traditional Quan họ, a câu đối must answer the câu ra through corresponding melody and meaning. The five comparisons below are illustrative dialogues between existing recordings, NOT five independently verified traditional answer-song pairs.

Different voices, the same homeland.
